Oil and Gas Sector Expertise
The oil and gas sector presents unique challenges, from ageing infrastructure and complex regulatory environments to safety-critical operations and environmental considerations.
RVA Group supports oil and gas clients across a comprehensive range of project management, engineering consultancy, health and safety management, planning and regulatory support services. Always working in compliance with local regulatory duty holder responsibilities, and wider reaching legislation, RVA ensures its clients operate within law at all stages of a project. From feasibility and front-end engineering design, our multidisciplinary teams deliver safe, compliant and commercially sound solutions across upstream, midstream and downstream facilities.

Front end engineering design for oil and gas projects
Front End Engineering Design (FEED) is a critical step in the planning of oil and gas projects, where early-stage decisions directly impact safety, cost, regulatory compliance and ultimately successful outcomes. The RVA HazDem process provides clients with the baseline to design out hazards and risks out of the demolition project helping to ensure they are fully considered and clearly defined from the outset.
The FEED stage can also extend to the production of detailed engineering feasibility studies, cost assessments and technical planning that create the foundation of safe and efficient project delivery. Our engineers work closely with asset owners and project stakeholders, to independently evaluate technical options and establish practical strategies for dismantling, demolition or redevelopment.
Asset operational life span in oil and gas facilities
Operational facilities within the oil and gas industry must maintain high levels of safety, reliability and regulatory compliance throughout their lifecycle, including decommissioning and demolition activities.
Historically, decommissioning specialists would be brought into a project when an asset was already redundant. Enlisting the support of engineers with a decommissioning mindset throughout the entire operational lifespan of an asset, is increasingly being acknowledged as a value-adding exercise. To comply with accounting requirements a decommissioning provision is required usually in the form of Asset Retirement Obligations (ARO). RVA’s in-house team has the capability and data to produce an ARO report in compliance with internationally recognised accounting standards e.g. FAS 143 and IAS137.
RVA provides specialist consultancy to help operators evaluate operational risks, asset conditions and long-term lifecycle planning. Through structured engineering assessments and strategic planning, our team helps clients identify the most efficient and safe pathway for managing ageing infrastructure, rerouting of utilities and enabling work to allow for eventual decommissioning.
Our independent technical advice ensures that operational and commercial considerations are fully aligned with safety and environmental requirements.
Oil and gas decommissioning expertise
Decommissioning oil and gas infrastructure is one of the most technically demanding stages of an asset’s lifecycle. Meticulous planning, regulatory compliance and rigorous safety management are essential to ensure projects are executed successfully. Early engagement with specialist consultants significantly improves project safety, cost control and environmental outcomes.
Full site demolition can be complex, but in most cases the redundant assets are intertwined or in close proximity to operational plant and services, this inleads to a significantly higher risk project profile. Through its bespoke HazDem process, the RVA team can help identify these complexities and mitigate them through the design process, reducing not only EHS risks but also commercial and business risks.
Whilst every project is considered and evaluated on its specific needs and criteria, RVA often assists with:
- Decommissioning strategy development
- Regulatory and compliance planning
- Cost estimation and feasibility studies
- Environmental permit surrender support
- Designing for decommissioning/demolition with reroutes and enabling works
- Engineering design for dismantling works
Demolition and dismantling of oil and gas assets
Oil and gas facilities often contain complex processing equipment, hazardous materials (including asbestos) and intricate structural configurations. As a result, demolition and dismantling activities must be carefully engineered to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.
RVA provides technical advisory, project and health and safety management services for relocation, dismantling and demolition projects, supporting asset owners in planning and delivering safe site clearance operations while maintaining operational continuity where required.
Our experience includes working in high-hazard industrial environments where safety, coordination and detailed engineering planning are critical to success.
Site remediation for oil and gas developments
Following decommissioning or demolition, oil and gas sites often require land remediation to meet environmental standards and prepare for future use. RVA supports clients with remediation planning, regulatory compliance and redevelopment strategies.
Our integrated approach ensures sites are returned to a safe, compliant condition while aligning with long-term commercial and environmental objectives.
Involving RVA at an early stage and potentially integrating any environmental remedial requirements into the demolition project, can significantly reduce project timelines, overall project costs and liabilities. This approach helps clients unlock the full potential of their sites, enabling successful redevelopment and long-term value.
Oil and Gas Sector Project - Motor Oil
RVA Group has supported major oil and gas operators on complex refinery and processing facility projects where safety, technical planning and regulatory compliance are critical.
A notable example includes engineering consultancy and project support on a refinery following a major fire, where RVA provided strategic guidance and technical oversight to support safe dismantling and asset management within an operational environment.
Projects such as this demonstrate RVA’s ability to work collaboratively with operators, contractors and regulatory bodies to ensure that large-scale industrial assets can be safely decommissioned while maintaining operational continuity where required.
