Summary:

Matthew Waller, RVA Group’s Operations Director is back in Singapore this week to hold meetings and inspect our projects currently underway in the country; a country where RVA first set foot over a decade and a half ago.

For 15 years, RVA has been at the forefront of high-hazard process plant demolition in Singapore—building trusted partnerships, transferring critical expertise, and helping shape safer industry practices. From a single project with INVISTA, a part of Koch Industries, to becoming a recognised partner across Asia, this journey reflects a commitment to precision, collaboration, and delivery.

From First Project to Trusted Partner

Celebrating a journey of expertise, collaboration, and impact in one of the world’s most advanced industrial landscapes.

Fifteen years ago, RVA arrived in Singapore to support a long-term client, INVISTA, with a highly specialised challenge: the decommissioning and demolition of a high-hazard process plant.

From the outset, it was clear that Singapore offered something exceptional. With world-class capabilities in the high-hazard process sector and a highly skilled workforce, the foundations for success were already in place. However, in relatively new and rapidly expanding industrial regions, demolition and decommissioning are often not fully considered, when growth is the main driver. At some point however, the need for specialist support is required and with it, a distinct level of expertise—one that RVA was uniquely positioned to provide.

“It was immediately clear we were working in a fantastic country, with wonderful people and deep technical experience,” RVA reflects. “But there was also an opportunity to contribute something new.”

Building Expertise and Trust

That first project marked the beginning of a long-standing presence in Singapore. Over the years, RVA has worked with leading organisations including Jurong Town Corporation (JTC), Teijin Polycarbonates, Tate & Lyle, Total and other major clients across the region.

Each project has required a careful balance of engineering precision, risk management, and operational discipline. Demolition in high-hazard process environments is inherently complex—demanding a deep understanding of structures, process risks, and potential failure modes.

Yet, beyond technical delivery, RVA’s most meaningful achievement lies in collaboration.

“One of our proudest contributions has been working alongside local Singaporean contractors and their Malaysian teammates—supporting them in developing the knowledge and confidence to safely deliver demolition in high-hazard environments.”

Overcoming Challenges Through Communication

Early on, one of the key challenges was bridging the gap between conventional demolition practices and the strict controls required in high-hazard industrial settings.

The solution was not just technical—it was cultural.

“These experiences reinforced a fundamental principle: success depends on clear communication and shared understanding. When expectations are properly defined and truly understood, projects are set up for success.”

This approach has become a cornerstone of RVA’s work in Singapore—ensuring alignment across teams, disciplines, and cultures.

A Unique Working Environment

Singapore’s dynamic environment has also played an important role in shaping the journey. The balance of urban energy, coastal landscapes, and green spaces creates a unique backdrop for both work and life.

Moments of cultural exchange have also left a lasting impression. One early experience involved arranging a hot works permit to allow a shrine and ceremonial fire as part of a team’s spiritual practice—an example of mutual respect and cultural understanding in action. Another early day’s ‘moment’ was explaining to a group of contractors that the wearing of harnesses for working at height are of no value if not secured to suitable fixed points.

A Defining Milestone

The successful completion of the first project marked a turning point. Recognition from JTC and other Singaporean clients established RVA not just as a specialist provider, but as a trusted partner.

That trust has been built and reinforced over many years of consistent delivery, collaboration, and shared learning.

Looking Ahead

Today, Singapore remains a key part of RVA’s future.

“It’s a great place, with great people and significant opportunity. We continue to see strong potential here.”

As RVA looks ahead, its commitment remains clear: to support safe, efficient, and expertly managed demolition and decommissioning projects—while continuing to strengthen partnerships across Singapore’s industrial sector.

Nothing has changed over the years, and the mission remains the same:

Keep everyone safe, deliver excellence, build trust, add value and help shape safer practices in one of the world’s most demanding environments.
