RVA operations director to present at leading demolition event

RVA Group operations director Ian Wharton has been invited to deliver an educative presentation at the Institute of Demolition Engineers’ (IDE) autumn seminar in Westminster, London.

Echoing RVA Group’s mission statement, Ian’s ‘Process Plant Sector Decommissioning & Dismantling’ presentation is designed to:

• Help deliver totally safe, environmentally secure and legislatively compliant projects

• Nurture a learning event culture aligned with a zero tolerance approach to all incidents and injuries

• Encourage engineering excellence, innovation and best value for clients.

Speaking exclusively to members of the Institute on 29 September, Ian will then encourage questions from the floor, providing delegates with additional knowledge transfer opportunities.

Ian has worked with some of the world’s largest and most prestigious blue-chip organisations, in sectors including oil and gas, pharmaceutical, chemical and petrochemical, power and energy, manufacturing, local authority and housing. He is therefore an incredibly experienced and competent engineer who is well placed to offer best-practice advice for demolition professionals seeking to further develop their expertise.

River Clyde Homes

It is with pleasure to provide a reference for RVA Group, who provided all Civil and Structural, CDM Health and Safety and Project Management services to River Clyde Homes for the implosive blowdown of Octavia Court in Greenock.

River Clyde Homes found RVA Group service in terms of client service and design were to the very highest standard and extremely professional at all stages of the project with a proactive approach to project management, keeping us informed on progress and also very efficient in addressing any issues that arose during the project. RVA Group brought to the project a wealth of knowledge and experience which was efficiently employed and given freely to River Clyde Homes staff involved in the first ever implosive blowdown of a multi storey block of flats to be held in the Inverclyde area.

RCH found that RVA Group performed as a valued and integral member of the team that delivered the project on schedule and within budget. River Clyde Homes hope to use these honed skills again in future commissions and projects.

William Sutton Housing Association

When William Sutton Housing Association sought experienced consultants to manage the demolition of a 16-storey tower block in central Salford, RVA Group demonstrated an impressive CV and professional approach to such works.

Not only did William Sutton have no previous experience of high-rise tower block demolition; the building’s close proximity to occupied family homes, situated only 10m from the block at the nearest point, presented additional challenges and uncertainties for the client. Yet thankfully with RVA, William Sutton was in safe hands.

RVA’s appointment included full project management services, the management of tenders, quantity surveying and CDM coordinator (safety) duties. RVA advised the safest and least disruptive methodology would be demolition with the controlled use of explosives, a technique other consultants who had tendered for the works had dismissed outright. Yet the client trusted RVA’s experience from working on similar demolition projects across a wide range of industries, and later praised the team for making the right decision and ensuring a job very well done. RVA’s in-depth pre-demolition excavation procedures and planning were also commended.

The project was delivered safely, on time, below budget, with minimal disruption to the local community and without damage or claim to any adjoining properties.

Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council

The demonstration of detailed method statements, safety plans, project programmes and best-value services, led to RVA Group’s appointment as consultants to Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council as they prepared to demolish seven buildings ranging from 8-18 storeys high.

RVA was involved with client briefings; site investigations; on-site safety; tender documentation and contractor evaluation/appointment; liaison with external stakeholders including utilities providers, emergency services, tenants and the general public. Walsall Council was able to complete the works in advance of programme, within budget and not least with the avoidance of injury to the environment, goods and people.

William Sutton Housing Association Ltd

The project has been delivered on time and below budget and RVA’s in depth pre-demolition evacuation procedures planning process has been exemplarily. The decision to demolish by controlled explosion within a very limited site area was advised to us by RVA as the safest and least disruptive method of works. Other consultants originally interviewed dismissed this option outright, but I am sure that all local organisations, emergency services and local residents would join me in congratulating RVA on making the right decision and on a job very well done.

‘….this was a difficult job and the demolition was outside our usual scope. The contract up to and including blowdown went extremely successfully within the timescales required and without any problems….
